A team of Ghent lawyers became world champions of lawyers’ football in Marrakech. This isn’t a unique football format; the only difference is that all the teams are made up of lawyers.

The Ghent lawyers’ team, led by captain Thomas Gillis, won the final last weekend in Marrakech against a French team. They had previously won against teams from Indonesia, India, Mexico, and Morocco. The title wasn’t entirely unexpected. Two years ago, the Ghent Lawyers Football Team, or “FC Balie,” also became European champions.
“We knew we had a good team, a very good one, and we put a lot of time into putting it together,” says Thomas Gillis. “And the rest depends on a number of factors. But everyone stayed fit throughout the tournament. We still played six 80-minute matches. We also owe that to our technical team of three people and the physiotherapist who was there.”
The cup is currently in the possession of a member of the technical staff, but will eventually find a place in the Ghent courthouse.
